Gunji's grandfather who was also the local priest (pʰudʒari) gave this description of attacks by the smallpox spirit (mata). Smallpox was much feared and villagers firmly believed it was caused by a spirit.
The recording and transcription were done not long after we had moved to the village in 1967.
