The Halbi Lexical Explanations were typed by the language asistants, Chingaru Ram Baghel and Durga Ram Kasyap during a visit to Kathmandu, Nepal in 1974.
The starting point was the word list collected by Betsy Schuyler and Fran Woods between 1967 and 1969, and added to by Fran Woods (1972-74). The plan was for the explanations to help flesh out the definitions for a more comprehensive lexicon and eventual dictionary of the Halbi language.
The material has lain in the archives until they were scanned in 2018. Now, they are being made available as a resource for linguistic research on the Halbi language as it was spoken in Bhatpal, Bastar District, in the then state of Madhya Pradesh between 1967-74.
The material is more or less alphabetised according to the Hindi alphabet. There are considerable inconsistencies. For example, somehow the language assistants typed the vowels section in reverse order. Also, some of the inconsistencies are because they made corrections to the spelling of some of the entries causing the entry to be out of order.
