Though this is the story of Kala Bati it also tells how the bear who once walked upright like people became bent over like a hunchback.
The birth of Kala Bati was the result of an agreement by the gods, Ispar and Parbati, but cost the life of her father before her birth and caused her mother to die in childbirth. Her brothers were very happy to welcome her. However, her sisters-in-law were not and tried to get rid of her on a number of occasions. She eventually married King Kala Sunder. Later a bear impersonates her and is exposed by her brothers with the result he is punished by no longer being able to walk upright but has to walk bent over.
The story seems to be a truncated version of a much longer tale. Chingaru typed this story, c1974. He was a young man in his late teens and while he knew the bare bones of the story he did not yet have the verbal skills of a story teller. The abbreviation becomes much more apparent towards the end of the tale.
